Conditions We Treat
Behavioral challenges in children and teens are often a sign that something deeper needs attention — and early, skilled support makes a lasting difference.
Children and adolescents communicate distress differently than adults. What presents as defiance, academic decline, social withdrawal, emotional outbursts, or behavioral problems at school is often a signal that a young person is struggling with something they do not yet have the language or capacity to express. Understanding that signal — and responding to it with expertise and care — is the foundation of effective care for younger patients.
Behavioral challenges in youth can stem from many sources: undiagnosed attention or learning difficulties, anxiety or depression, developmental differences, family stress, social difficulties, trauma, or simply the complexity of navigating growing up. At the Adult & Child Counseling & Psychiatric Center in Melbourne, FL, our clinical team has specialized in child and adolescent behavioral care for over 30 years, serving families across Brevard County and the Space Coast.
Parents who come to us are often exhausted and worried — and we want you to know that reaching out is the right step. Our approach is collaborative: we work with the young person, their family, and when appropriate, their school to build a full picture and a care plan that supports everyone involved.
At the Adult & Child Counseling & Psychiatric Center, care for children and adolescents with behavioral challenges begins with a comprehensive evaluation that considers the young person's developmental history, family environment, school functioning, and any co-occurring emotional or psychiatric concerns. We take time to understand the whole child — not just the presenting behavior.
Our licensed counselors use age-appropriate, evidence-based therapeutic approaches including cognitive-behavioral therapy adapted for youth, behavioral interventions, skills-building for emotional regulation, and family-systems work to address dynamics that may be contributing to the challenges. Family members are actively included in the treatment process, particularly for younger children, where parental support and consistency are critical to outcomes.
When a psychiatric evaluation indicates that medication management may be an appropriate part of the treatment plan, our psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners provide careful assessment and monitored care. Prescribers and therapists maintain close communication throughout, ensuring that every provider involved in a young patient's care is working from the same goals and the same understanding of their progress.
Care is usually a combination rather than a single service. These are the ones our clinicians draw on most for this.
